John and Margaret Swan have been in business for 26 years in Arklow. Following the success of their shop, John Swan Diamond Studio, they were delighted to open their second store in the highly acclaimed Bridgewater shopping centre, Arklow.
John Swan is a goldsmith himself, and nowadays is almost unique in being able to create hand made jewellery or adapt it for customers.
In a fascinating career, John has had many commissions abroad, and still occasionally travels on business to the US, Britain and the Continent. He also has his own workshop in his Main Street premises, where customers from as far as Cork and Dublin come to have engagement rings handcrafted to the most exacting standards.
John Swan says he is impressed with the patience of modern couples, who will often spend two or three hours searching for the perfect engagement ring. More often than not, John's skills in diamond crafting are called for, as he has seen an enormous rise in demand for diamonds and a huge demand for platinum, as it maintains a lovely lustre finish.
There is also a growing number of couples requiring John to handcraft wedding rings to fit snugly around a heart or princess shape diamond engagement ring. This calls for a rare set of goldsmiths skills that sadly are diminishing in modern times.
A related service that John provides is restoration work of old, especially Victorian, jewellery. He has had many customers coming to his studio for this type of work, where the damaged or worn items are returned to their original condition.
On a trip to Germany, John encountered Thomas Sabo jewellery, and now his Arklow outlet has the biggest sales in Europe by proportion of population for Thomas Sabo jewellery.
John Swan Diamond Studio also retails Ti-Sento jewellery from Europe, Newbridge Silver, Waterford Crystal and top of the range Swiss watches like Tissot, Michel Herbelin, D&G, Seiko, CK, Guess, Swatch and Flick Flack to name but a few.
